5 Primary & 7 Secondary Rasas or Relationships with Krishna by devotees!
FIVE PRIMARY RASAS WITH KRISHNA
(1) SANTA RASA (REVERENCE),
(2) DASYA RASA (LOVING SERVICE),
(3) SAKYA RASA (FRIENDSHIP),
(4) VATSALYA RASA (PARENTAL AFFECTION), and
(5) MADHURYA RASA (CONJUGAL / INTIMATE AFFECTION).
Let us see them in detail:
(1) SANTA RASA (REVERENCE)
This rasa is shown by those who approaches the Lord with admiration of His greatness, Opulence, etc. This may trigger love on Krishna in future, this mood will not be a loving mood.
For example, when we see a person who is in a greater position than us, we show our reverence. Similarly, if it is shown to Krishna, it is a reverence form of relation.
Examples of santa rasa devotees:
(1) Nine yogis such as Kavi, Havi, Antariksa, Prabuddha, Pippalayana, Avirhotra, Dravida or Drumila, Camasa and Karabhajana.
(2) The four Kumaras such as Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatkumara and Sanatana.
(2) DASYA RASA (LOVING SERVICE)
When a Santa rasa advances further, that person may like to do some service to Krishna. This is similar to the workers start serving our higher authorities or leaders. This service attitude need not be a form of love, but, even as a reverence or fear.
Examples of Dasya rasa devotees:
(1) Hanumanji
(2) Daruka
(3) Raudra (Anger ) - Showing anger on Krishna

- nītā krodha-ratiḥ puṣṭiṁ vibhāvādyair nijocitaiḥ
- hṛdi bhakta-janasyāsau raudra-bhakti-raso bhavet
"When devotion is mixed with anger in the heart of the devotee, the taste is called raudra-bhakti-rasa."
Examples of raudra-bhakti- rasa devotees:
(1) Gopis getting angry on Akrura – for taking away Krishna from Vrindavan.
(2)Nakul getting angry on the Räjasuya Yajna assembly for not recognizing Krishna as the best personality for Agra-pujä.
(4) Adbhuta (wonder) - Wondering Krishna)
Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (4.2.1):
- ātmocitair vibhāvādyaiḥ svādyatvaṁ bhakta-cetasi
- sā vismaya-ratir nītādbhuta-bhakti-raso bhavet
“When one's general attachment is fixed in wonder, it is called adbhuta-bhakti-rasa.”

(1) Brahmavimohan - Lila , Vrindavanvasi and Lord Brahma were Amazed
(2) Lord Shows Vishvarupa Darshan to Arjuna
(5) hāsya(comedy) - Making comedy)
in the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (4.1.6). The hāsya-bhakti-rasa, laughing devotion, is explained as follows:
- vakṣyamāṇair vibhāvādyaiḥ puṣṭiṁ hāsa-ratir gatā
- hāsya-bhakti-raso nāma budhair eṣa nigadyate
"When through devotional service a laughing attachment to Kṛṣṇa is developed, it is called hāsya-bhakti-rasa by learned scholars."

- ānīyamānā svādyatvaṁ vīra-bhakti-raso bhavet

- bhavec choka-ratir bhakti-raso hi karuṇābhidhaḥ
“When one's devotional attitude and attachment for Kṛṣṇa is mixed with lamentation, it is called karuṇa-bhakti-rasa.”
Examples of karuṇa-bhakti rasa devotees:

(2)
8. bībhatsa (shock) - Dread (greatly feared; dreadful)
B.r.s. 4.7.1):
- puṣṭiṁ nija-vibhāvādyair jugupsā-ratir āgatā
- asau bhakti-raso dhīrair bībhatsākhya itīryate
“When one's attachment for Kṛṣṇa develops in an abominable way, and the devotee enjoys it, that is called bībhatsa-bhakti-rasa.”
In ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa in dread, there are two causes of fear: either Kṛṣṇa Himself or some dreadful situation for Kṛṣṇa. When a devotee feels himself to be an offender at Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet, Kṛṣṇa Himself becomes the object of dreadful ecstatic love. And when, out of ecstatic love, friends and well-wishers of Kṛṣṇa apprehend some danger for Him, that situation becomes the object of their dread.
1. When Ṛkṣarāja was in front of Kṛṣṇa fighting and suddenly realized that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead - Kṛṣṇa had to pacify him by saying, “Please calm yourself down. I have no anger toward you. You may, however, become as angry as you like with Me—to expand your service in fighting with Me and to increase My sporting attitude."
2. When the Keśī demon was causing disturbances in Vṛndāvana, Mother Yaśodā told her husband, Nanda Mahārāja, "Our child is very restless, so we had better keep Him locked up within the house.”
3. After the Pūtanā witch had been killed, Mother Yaśodā at once requested her friends, "Please stop! Please stop! Don't bring up the incident of Pūtanā. I become distressed just by remembering this incident.”
==================
(9) 9. bhayānaka(horror) - Ghastliness (shock, revulsion, or horror)
bhayānaka(horror) - Ghastliness (shock, revulsion, or horror)
(B.r.s. 4.6.1):
vakṣyamāṇair vibhāvādyaiḥ puṣṭiṁ bhaya-ratir gatā
bhayānakābhidho bhakti-raso dhīrair udīryate
"When devotion is mixed with fear, it is called bhayānaka-bhakti-rasa."
It is understood from authoritative sources that an attachment for Kṛṣṇa because of feelings of disgust sometimes presents a ghastly ecstasy in devotional service. When a devotee, lamenting for his past abominable activities, shows special symptoms on his body, his feeling is called ecstasy in devotional service in ghastliness. This is caused by the awakening of his Kṛṣṇa consciousness. In this mellow of devotional service in ghastliness, the subecstatic symptoms are spitting upon the consideration of one's past life, contorting the face, covering the nose and washing the hands. Other symptoms which may be present are shame, exhaustion, madness, illusion, frustration, humility, self-pity, restlessness, eagerness and stunning of the body.
A fortunate child in the womb of his mother prayed to Kṛṣṇa as follows: "O enemy of Kaṁsa, I am suffering so much because of this material body. Now I am trapped within a mess of blood, urine and liquid stool, within the womb of my mother. I have no ability to engage in Your loving devotional service, but please save me!"
There is a similar statement by a person fallen in a hellish condition of life. He addressed the Supreme Lord thus: "My dear Lord, Yamarāja has placed me in a situation which is full of filthy and obnoxious smells. O my Lord, O deliverer from the hellish conditions of life. I have fallen into this hell, but I shall try to remember Your holy name always, and in this way I shall try to keep my body and soul together." This is another instance of ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa in an abominable situation.
(10) SAKYA RASA (FRIENDSHIP)
This Sakya rasa is the next stageof that person that includes the previous two rasas also. That is, reverence and service to Krishna is still there, but in a diminished condition; In due course of time, it further advances to the close friendship with Krishna. This develops a kind of equality and closeness in mingling with Krishna. In this phase, the friend will not give much importance to the greatness of Krishna because of familiarity.
For example, first, you may show reverence with a person; then, you may serve him; this associations may develop as a close friendship with him.
If you take Sudama, he developed a close friendship with Krishna that is in Sakya rasa and Krishna even carried Sudama on his back. Arjuna too showed intimate friendship with Krishna and Krishna drove the chariot for Arjuna in the war field.
Examples of Sakya rasa devotees:
(1) Gopas
(2)
(11) VATSALYA RASA (PARENTAL AFFECTION)
When the friendship further intensifies, it develops as a Protective care like caring a person who is under our care. This is like Parents showing a kind of caring attitude to their children or the children of others.
For example, when Yasodha saw all the creations inside the mouth of child Krishna, she prayed to demigods to protect her child. This is out of parental affection.
Examples of Vatsalya rasa devotees:
(1)
(2)
(12) MADHURYA RASA (CONJUGAL AFFECTION)
This is the topmost form of rasa one can maintain with Krishna. This will include all the previous four rasas. At the same time, the person would have attained a state of having the intimate feelings of love and sharing intimate exchanges with Krishna. Here the affection has crossed protective state. There will be no formalities between them. Just care and nurture of Krishna will be in their mind.
For example, Gopis were very much worried whether any stone or thorns may be pricking His feet even when Krishna walked. They even thought that they can lie on the ground and Krishna can walk on their bodies. They never cared for their own pleasures, but to give themselves to Krishna. That much of care on Krishna. This Madhurya rasa is possible only with Krishna because He is the master of all souls. This is not possible with the humans.
The above five rasas take one to the topmost state of relationship with Krishna.
What about the persons who are unable to show the above PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS with Krishna?
If it is not possible for them, they may show any of the seven other relationships (rasas) with Krishna. Such extra rasas are called SECONDARY RASAS.
Examples of Madhurya rasa devotees:
(1)
(2)
SEVEN SECONDARY RASAS
(1) Showing anger on Krishna.
(2) Wondering Krishna.
(3) Making comedy.
(4) Chivalry (honour, kindness, and courage)
When one's attachment for Kṛṣṇa develops in an abominable way, and the devotee enjoys it, that is called bībhatsa-bhakti-rasa.”
(5) Merciful relation.
(6) Dread (greatly feared; dreadful)
(7) Ghastliness (shock, revulsion, or horror).
